There are two main forms of the exam: a paper-based test, an internet-based test at the test center. You can choose the one provided in your country or area.

What should I know about the HSK 7-9 test?

Computer requirements:

1. Please install Windows (7/10) operating system and Google Chrome. DO NOT use Mac (Apple)
2. Suggested screen resolution ≥ 1440 * 900 (Less than 1366 * 768 is NOT allowed) Windows 10 displays 100%
3. Must have a camera (≥ 300,000 Pixels)
4. Mobile devices are NOT allowed (including cellphones, tablets, etc.)

Required headset

1. Plug-in headset is necessary (Bluetooth headsets are NOT allowed)
2. Make sure your headset is clear and of good quality. Make sure your microphone has good acoustics
3. When taking the Listening and Oral test sections, please wear your headset

Internet requirements

The upload and download symmetrical bandwidth should be ≥20M, and the connection speed for the test taker must reach 150KB/s or above. Proxy mode or VPNs cannot be used. Please test the network speed yourself in advance, and if it meets the standard when tested more than three times, it qualifies.

从 VS 离

When we ask about distances or directions, we usually use the prepositions 从(cóng) and 离(lí) to mean “from.” Although both can form adverbial phrases, there are more differences than similarities between them.

1. You can use 离(lí) to show the distance from a place, time, or objective. It follows the pattern of “A+离+B+ Adjective /Numerical phrase“.

For example:

我家离学校五百多米。(Wǒ jiā lí xuéxiào wǔbǎiduō mǐ.) 
My house is over 500 meters from the school.

火车站离学校不远。(Huǒchēzhàn lí xuéxiào bùyuǎn.) 
The train station is not far from the school.

2. 从(cóng) shows the beginning point of a process, sequence, distance, or period of time. It can mean “since” in some situations. The structure is “Subject + 从…… + Verb/Adjective“.

For example:

我们从学校出发了。(Wǒmen cóng xuéxiào chūfā le.)
We set off from the school.

我们是从上周一开始上班的。(Wǒmen shì cóng shàng zhōuyī kāishǐ shàngbān de.)
We have been working [here] since last Monday.

In addition, 从(cóng) is often paired with 到(dào). The structure is “从 A 到 B”. This structure can be used at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence as an adverbial phrase, typically meaning “from… to…” or a similar variation of this pattern.

For example:

从今天到明天我们放假。(Cóng jīntiān dào míngtiān wǒmen fàngjià.)
From today to tomorrow, we are on vacation.

我们从今天到明天放假。(Wǒmen cóng jīntiān dào míngtiān fàngjià.)
We will have a break from today to tomorrow.

从理想到现实需要我们付出很多努力。(Cóng lǐxiǎng dào xiànshí xūyào wǒmen fùchū hěn duō nǔlì.)
In order to go from dreams to reality, we need to put in a lot of effort.

向 VS 往

Many native Chinese speakers have a hard time distinguishing between 向 (xiàng) and 往 (wǎng). This is because these two words can indicate the direction of an action and be used interchangeably in some situations.

For example:

向前走200米就到学校了。(Xiàng qián zǒu 200 mǐ jiù dào xuéxiào le.)
Walk forward 200 meters and you will arrive at the school.

往前走200米就到学校了。(Wǎng qián zǒu 200 mǐjiù dào xuéxiào le.)
Walk forward 200 meters and you will arrive at the school.

On the other hand, 向(xiàng) can also show the object of an action, while 往(wǎng) cannot be used this way.

For example:

向他点头。（√）(the predicate is a specific movement of the body)
Nod my head towards him.
往他点头。（×）

向他学习。（√）(the predicate is an abstract concept)
往他学习。（×）Study like him.

Structure 1

Number A + Number B

You can use two adjacent numbers to show an uncertain number, which could be either the first number or the second number. Usually, the sequence goes from the lower number to the higher one.

我叫了两三次，他都不理我。（Wǒ jiàole liǎnɡsān cì，tā dōu bù lǐ wǒ.）
I’ve called him two or three times, but he didn’t answer me anyway.

Structure 2

Number + Measure word + 左右/上下

You can use 上下 (shàngxià) to refer to a number that could be either larger or smaller than the given number. It is mainly used for age and cannot be used for time or distance. On the other hand, 左右 (zuǒyòu) has no usage limits.

从我家到学校开车三十分钟左右。(Cónɡ wǒ jiā dào xuéxiào kāichē sānshí fēnzhōnɡ zuǒyòu.)
It will take about 30 minutes to drive from my house to the school.

那位大爷看起来六十岁上下/左右。(Nàwèi dàye kàn qǐlai liùshí suì shànɡxià/zuǒyòu.)
That old person looks like about 60 years old.

Structure 3

Number + Measure word + 多

This structure can indicate a number that is more than the given number. Typically, the number should be a single-digit or a multi-digit number with a single digit. Measure words such as 个 (ge), the metrology measure word, the time measure word, or 倍 (bei), can be used.

我买了四斤多的牛肉。(Wǒ mǎile sì jīn duō de niúròu.)
I’ve bought more than 2 kilos beef.

工资涨了两倍多。(Gōnɡzī zhǎnɡle liǎnɡ bèi duō.)
The salary has more than doubled.

我做了两个多小时的作业。(Wǒ zuòle liǎnɡ ɡè duō xiǎo shí de zuòyè.)
I’ve done homework for more than two hours.

Number + 多 + Measure word

You can use this structure to indicate a number that is greater than the given number. Typically, the number should be a multiple of ten or an integer ending with a zero.

There are more than 50 girls in their class.

Structure 4

Number + Measure word + 来 + Noun./ Adjective

Structure 5

近 + Numeral Phrase

近(jìn) can indicate a number that is close to the given number. Typically, the given number is much larger.

Structure 6

上 + Digit

You can use this phrase to indicate a large number.

Structure 7

Number + 把

Structure 8

Time point/Time word + 前后

You can use前后(qiánhòu) to indicate a number that is larger or smaller than the given number. However, it cannot be used after a phrase that denotes a time period.

他昨天十点前后回家的。(Tā zuótiān shídiǎn qiánhòu huíjiā de.)
He came back home around 10 p.m.

Structure 9

大概/ 大约 + Number + Measure word

You can use 大概(dàgài) / 大约(dàyuē) + Number + Measure word to indicate an approximate number.

从这儿到北京大约/大概要五个小时。(Cónɡ zhè’r dào BěiJīnɡ dà yuē/dàɡài yào wǔ ɡè xiǎoshí.)
It will take about 5 hours to get from here to Beijing.

Structure 10

至多/最多 + Number + Measure word

You can use 至多(zhìduō)/最多(zuì duō) + Number + Measure word to indicate a maximum.

Sentences with Serial Verb Phrases include two or more verbs or verbal phrases that describe the same subject. The basic form is:

Subject + Verb 1 + (Object 1) + Verb 2 + (Object 2)

Each piece of the structure has a distinct purpose, which are as follows:

1. Means or Manner

In this form, Verb 1 describes how Verb 2 is done. For example:

我开车去超市。(Wǒ kāi chē qù chāoshì.)
I drive to go to the supermarket.

我们用筷子吃饭。(Wǒmen yònɡ kuàizi chīfàn.)
We use chopsticks to eat.

2. Purpose

Verb 2 can be used to indicate the purpose of Verb 1.

The Pivotal sentence, also known as ‘兼语句’ (Jiānyǔjù), is a crucial sentence structure that has both informational and aesthetic functions. To understand this sentence structure, let’s take a look at an example.

(Wǒ jiào mèimei chī wǔfàn.)
我叫妹妹吃午饭。
I ask my younger sister to have lunch.

Based on this example, we can see the structure:

In simple terms, the Pivotal sentence follows this structure:

Noun 1 + Verb 1 + [Noun 2] + Verb 2 + Other elements

Noun 1 performs Verb 1. Then Noun 2 becomes the Object of Verb 1 and the logical subject of Verb 2, which is followed by other elements. There are various types of Pivotal sentences based on the verbs used, but to keep things simple and straightforward we will focus on two basic structures.

Structure 1: 

Noun 1 + 让/叫/派/请… + Noun 2 + Verb 2 +（other elements）

E.g.

让我看看。（Rànɡ wǒ kànkɑn.)
Let me have a look.

老师叫/让你交作业。（Lǎoshī jiào/ rànɡ nǐ jiāo zuòyè.）
The teacher asked you to hand in homework.

公司派我出国。（Gōnɡsī pài wǒ chūɡuó.）
The firm assigned me to go abroad.

我的好朋友请我去北京。（Wǒde hǎopénɡyou qǐnɡ wǒ qù Běijīnɡ.）
My best friend invited me to Beijing.

Meaning:

1. To say “Noun 1 asks or requests Noun 2 to do something,” use “请” (qǐng), “派” (pài), “要求” (yāoqiú), etc., as the Verb 1 in the Pivotal sentence structure.

E.g.

我要求他去睡觉。（Wǒ yāoqiú tā qù shuìjiào.）
I asked him to go to sleep.

2. To say that “Noun 1 permits Noun 2 to do something,” the appropriate Verb 1 would be “同意,” (tóngyì) meaning “to agree.”

E.g.

学校同意我们去公园。（Xuéxiào tónɡyì wǒmen qù ɡōnɡyuán.）
The school allowed us to go to park.

The negative form:

Noun 1 + 不/没（没有）+ 让/叫/派/请… + Noun 2 + Verb 2 + (other elements)

E.g.

老师没叫/让我交作业。（Lǎoshī méi jiào/rànɡ wǒ jiāo zuòyè.）
The teacher didn’t ask me to hand in homework.

妈妈不同意我去成都。（Māmɑ bù tónɡyì wǒ qù Chénɡdū.）
Mom didn’t allow me to go to Chengdu.

Structure 2: 

Noun 1 + 让/叫/使… + Noun 2 + Action 2 (Verb/Adjective)

E.g.

这件事让/叫/使我不高兴。（Zhèjiànshì rànɡ/jiào/shǐ wǒ bù ɡāoxìnɡ.）
This thing makes me unhappy.

这篇文章让/叫/使我伤心。（Zhèpiān wénzhānɡ rànɡ/jiào/shǐ wǒ shānɡxīn.）
This article makes me sad.

他的话让/使妹妹决定去工作。（Tādehuà rànɡ/shǐ mèimei juédìnɡ qù ɡōnɡzuò.）
His words made his young sister decide to work.

Meaning:

1. Structure 2 differs from Structure 1 because Noun 1 is the reason for Noun 2 doing something or changing, not asking or ordering Noun 2 to do something.
2. When Action 2 is an Adjective, there are usually no other elements following it, but if it’s a Verb, there could be other elements.
3. The negative form of this Pivotal sentence structure is complex and depends on the sentence’s meaning.

Some other points to keep in mind are:

1. The Pivotal sentence usually uses a verb that expresses asking or ordering in the first verb position.
2. Structure 2 differs from Structure 1, as Noun 1 in Structure 2 is the cause of Noun 2’s action or change.
3. “使” (shǐ) can be used in Structure 2 but not in Structure 1.
4. When an adjective is used as Action 2, there are usually no other elements following it.

Understanding Modern China through Comedic Rap

“Laowai Style” by Jesse Appell is a parody of the sensational hit, “Gangnam Style”. This song is about the life of a foreigner in Beijing. Appell is a Fulbright Scholar in China and stand-up comedian earning a living. He has been making Making Sen$e far-flung Sino-economics correspondent since 2012.

In 2013, he debuted another hit, “Mo Money Mo Fazhan” as parody of “Mo Money Mo Problems”. The more development and consumption in Chinese society results in more ills that afflict it the country, for examples, pollution and economic inequality. Another song that he released explains this tension is “China’s Theme Song: Can I Subsitute GDP for Disposable Diapers?”

Paul Solman caught up with Appeal, his former student, in Boston for the Thursday night segment of Making Sen$e. He explains why money is such a big deal in China – more so than in the United States. “Everyone’s always talking about how am I going to make money? How much did that subway cost to build? How much do I pay to go on the subway? These issues come up in America, but they’re everywhere in China.”

How Chinese People Actually Say “No”

We all know there is not particular word in Chinese that can be translated as just “no”. But did you know that there are all sorts of phrases that could mean “no” even if they mean something else when taken literally? These phrases can be misleading if you come from a culture that values direct communication.

One of the biggest differences between Chinese and Americans is that Americans are more “direct”. This communication difference usually can make Chinese people feel uncomfortable. On the other hand, the “indirect” nature of Chinese interaction can drive an American crazy. They feel they need to guess what a Chinese person meant and have to force people to give a clear yes or no answer.

Westerners may expect people to mean what they say and take their words at face value. We need to take look at how to communicate the possible indications of the Chinese people are saying. Let’s take look at the different phrases and examples how they might be used.

“Don’t Have” – méi yǒu (没有)
If you have ever entered a store where you ask for a particular item, they may tell you “méi yǒu”. Even though you’ve bought it there before, or you know someone bought it there early. It actually means in some cases is that “we don’t have it”, but in other cases it means “I don’t want to/can’t help you.” You will usually hear this from time to time in government services offices or if you catch someone in a bad mood.

“Let me think about it” – xiǎng yī xiǎng ba (想一想吧)
If you ask a coworker if he or she will go to the boss with you to ask if everyone in your department can leave early on Friday, then he or she tells you “xiǎng yī xiǎng ba”. Even though they say they will think about it, it actually means, “I don’t want to, but I don’t want to tell you that” This coworker is making sure your relationship with them remains in good terms however doesn’t want to risk upsetting you with a no so he or she says they will think about it.

“Another day” – gǎi tiān ba (改天吧)
You are at a live music bar with some friends and asked a Chinese friend to join you. He seemed excited to be invited but when it comes time to meet, he says his uncle is in town, so he can’t join you. He says “gǎi tiān ba ”. You tried to reschedule with him but he gives you a vague response. It actually means, “I don’t want to, but I need to find a way to let you down easily”. It is a white lie excuse that helps save face and keep the friendship.

“Next time” – xià cì ba (下次吧)
Heading out after work for dinner with some friends and you ask your coworker to join you. He or she says they are busy so maybe next time. And when you ask her again, he or she says the same thing. It really means “No thanks.” If this is happens to you, save yourself the embarrassment and don’t take it literally, it may only result in the same answer in the future.

“It’s unclear to me” – bú tài qīng chu (不太清楚)
You ask for direction from someone on the street, but before you finish asking your question, the guy shakes his head and says, “I’m not sure”. It actually means, “I don’t want to tell you or I truly have no idea. Please don’t ask me again”. If someone is quick to say this phrase, it is best to just leave it at that. Bú tài qīng chu is a clear sign you better ask someone else.

“In two days” – gùo liǎng tiān ba (过两天吧)
You ask the shop assistant who said “méi yǒu” when the store might more of the item you are looking for in stock. She replies with “gùo liǎng tiān ba” which you understand to be two days time. It actually means “Maybe at some time point in the future. I don’t know when”. This phrase is just a saying that doesn’t literally mean 2 days time, but some time later.

Once you identify the thinly veiled “no” in Chinese, you will be able to save yourself a lot of misunderstanding. But the advantage of learning these phrases was being able to use them for your own purpose. Given it a shot and see how you can build relationships in China.

Nine Tips about the HSK

(Written Chinese)

Have you been learning Chinese and want to a way to prove it? You can get a certificated for your Mandarin language skills with the HSK.

1. What is the HSK?
HSK stands for:
Hanyu = 汉语 (han4yu3) which means “Chinese language”
Shuiping= 水平 (shui3ping2) which means “level (of achievement etc)”
Kaoshi= 考试 (kao3shi4) which means “exam”
It is a test that measures a person’s proficiency in Mandarin, testing listening comprehension, speaking and writing.

2. Why do I need to take the HSK?
Studying Chinese can be difficult to see improvement and you may feel like you are treading water in the language. Having a goal like the HSK can help give you Chinese studies a purpose. This test will also serve you in your university studies or on your resume. It will ultimately show you where your Chinese level is.

3. How do I know what level of HSK I should be studying for?
You don’t need to take the HSK test in order, but if you have been studying for a while jump to HSK level 3. If you have a Chinese teacher, you can ask him or her to help you determine your HSK level. There is also a self-assessment tool that you can use without a teacher available on the Hanban website. The HSK is divided into 2 sections: The HSK Written Exam and the HSKK Oral Exam. The HSK Written has 6 levels while HSKK Oral Exam has 3 levels. You will receive separate certificates for completing the two different exams.

4. How can I take the HSK?
There are two ways the Written Tests are taken, in person or online in a testing center. There is no difference in your HSK certificate if you taken the paper or online test.

5. When and where can I find out my HSK Test Results?
After 1 month you can login into your account at chinesetest and enter your registration code to access your results. The results are also available within 2 months of taking of the exam at the test center in which you took the exam. You will need your admission slip to receive the results.

6. How can I get my HSK Test certificate?
Your testing center will provide you with all the information you need to know about obtaining your certificate. Often you will mail them to you or you can pick them up once the results are published.

7. For how long is my HSK Certificate valid?
The HSK certificate has no expiration date when applying for jobs! However, when applying with academic purposes, it is valid for 2 years from the date it was taken. This is of course when you are applying for a Chinese university. Note that employers may not be familiar with the HSK exam, so you can list it as an Official Chinese Proficiency Test ranging from level 1-6.

8. What is the “new” HSK test?
The “new” HSK test is Hanban administered test, which is more practical and easier than the old HSK exams. There was a debate between Hanban, and Beijing Language and Culture University of how to administer the HSK exams. Over time, Hanban were more practical and better testing methods.

How Learning some Basic Theory can improve your Pronunciation

Ideally, all students would acquire perfect pronunciation through listening to and mimicking native Chinese audio. Sadly, this doesn’t work well for adult learners but seems to work well for children. However, age isn’t an excuse for not learning, so it requires times and effort to learn it. Let’s take a look on how to learn proper pronunciation in Chinese.

The best way to learn is to combine a large amount of listening with practice. Having a Chinese teacher will help act as a role model and give you feedback. Also, theory or phonetics is very important in learning to properly pronounce in Chinese.

Phonetics is important because Chinese had a lot of different ways for pronunciation compared to English. By studying phonetics, you will always find new things that will help you pay attention to crucial aspects of the pronunciation. It will also help you notice key aspects of the spoken language around you with native speakers and differences of what they say to what you say.

Some examples of how theory has improved my pronunciation are:
1. Third tone in Chinese is a low tone. All foreigners have struggled with this one and not all teachers have explained it accurately. It is just a low tone in front of the all tones except another third tone with an optional rise when in isolation or at the end of sentences.

2. “j/q/x” aren’t produced with the tip of the tongue and thus aren’t really between “z/c/s” and “zh/ch/sh”. These sounds are instead produced with the tongue tip down. I had a lot of personal practice and experimentation about these sounds. It has helped the pronunciation of my fellow mandarin students in learning this type.

3. No initial in in Mandarin other than “l”, “m”, “n” and “r” are voiced. Its very common to hear people pronounce initials with voicing, but it isn’t right. It sometimes happens with b, d and g, but these initials can be voiced in the middle of words.

You can argue that I could have corrected all these problems with a good enough teacher. But I think the problem is most people don’t have access to one-to-one tutors that are competent enough to correct details with pronunciation.

Listening, practice and adding theory as a combination of learning is best way to learn to Chinese pronunciation. 95% practice and listening with 5% theory will help you improve in this aspect in Chinese. Try out what you learned and good luck on your studies!

This time let’s first start with some tips in HSK1 Reading Part.

First Session in HSK 1 Exam Reading Part—True or False.

The True or False part in HSK-1 Reading focuses on vocabulary, examinees should memorize the 150 vocabularies involved in HSK-1.

While working in this part of the test, the examinees should first pay attention to chū zū ch distinguishing words from the same category. For example, “出租车” (taxi), “fēi jī huǒ chē – 飞机”(airplane), “火车”(train) are all means of transportation, but the images tīnɡ dú kàn will be different. Another example, “听”(listen), “读”(read), “看” (look) and xiě “写”(write) are all commonly used verbs.

Usually the pictures use an earphone to tīnɡ xiě indicate “听”(listen), a pencil for “写”(write), a person opening his or her mouth dú lěnɡ rè for “读”(read). Also, the topics may be about “冷”(cold) and “热”(hot), if the lěnɡ people in the picture are wearing thick clothes, then the meaning conveyed is “冷”(cold). However, if a sun is drawn in the picture, and people are shading rè themselves by their hands or wearing less clothes, then the meaning shall be “热”(hot).

Secondly, examinees should pay attention to subordinate relationships. For shuǐ ɡuǒ example, let’s look at “水果”(fruit). If there is specific fruit drawn in the picture for pínɡ ɡuǒ pínɡ ɡuǒ shuǐ ɡuǒ example “苹果” (apple), then answer would be “苹果” (apple) or “水果”(fruit). While shuǐ ɡuǒ if a strawberry is drawn but not an answer option, then the answer shall only be “水果”(fruit).

Items of the second part in HSK-1 Reading are often formatted with five pictures and five sentences under these pictures. The examinees are required to choose corresponding picture to each sentence. This section mainly tests the examinees’ understanding of sentence meanings.

The examinees should grasp the words indicating some key information like location, character and behavior. Then one can choose the corresponding picture according to this key information. For example, if the sentence is asking about jīn tiān xià yǔ mɑ weather like “今天下雨吗？”（Is it going to rain today?）; then one should check which picture contains an expression of raining.

The examinees should practice common basic sentence patterns’ exercises, and make their own sentences with the 150 words of HSK-1. This practice can improve his or her ability in Chinese reading comprehension.

This part of the exam contains five questions, where the students are asked to choose the correct answer from the options of A to E.

Before the test, the examinees should study and create a summary of the common question formats, Therefore, when he or she come across the same questions, they can immediately determine the key points of the question.

During the test, the examinees should first observe the five questions, and then nǐ shén me shí hou lái běi jīnɡ ？
find out the correct answers to them. For example, “你什么时候来北京？” shén me shí hou（When do you come to Beijing?）, and here the question is about “什么时候”(when), hence the answer should be related to time. Sometimes words from the questions may also be a part of the answering options, where you need to only understand the question to determine the correct answer.

In the HSK-1 tests, the “Choose right words for the blanks” part requires the examinees to select an appropriate answer to complete the sentence.

The examinees should firstly understand the general idea of the sentence, and then choose one from the answers. The blanked words usually are related to some shén me key information in the sentence. They can be: interrogative words like “什么 dǎ dǎ diàn huà”(what), key verbs like “打”(call) in the phrase of “打电话”（make a phone call）, qián miɑn hé words indicating directions like “前面”(in the front) and prepositions “和”(and) with a parallel meaning.

To handle these problems, the most important thing is to understand the meaning of the whole sentence, and the five answer options. If one knows how to use each answer correctly, then the examinee will find the most appropriate answer.

• Be familiar with the vocabulary of HSK-1, and be able to understand these phrases and match them with the pictures. The phrase containing a consistent meaning with the picture is the right answer, while the inconsistent ones are wrong.
• You should firstly observe the pictures and get a general understanding of them in their mind. You then should listen to the recordings and choose true or false based on the contents of the pictures.

• Firstly you should observe the pictures and identify the contents in the pictures. If the content of the pictures are articles, pay attention listening to the recordings which the articles are involved and then choose the right answer,
• If there are some characters in the picture, the examinees should take note of their behaviors and facial expressions. By knowing what they are doing or whether they are happy or not and inferring the relationships between them.

Third section in HSK 1 listening-Choose the right pictures based on given dialogues.

Before the third section HSK-1 Listening begins, you should carefully observe the five pictures on the paper and infer the possible questions: Who? Where? What?

• If the question is about “谁”, the answer may be occupation, family members and or animals.
• If the question is asking about “在哪里”, then the answers can be in the hospital, school, shop, restaurant or at home.
• If the question is about “做什么”, the answers can be eating, sleeping, drinking and shopping etc. Also, the main point of a picture may be about “天气”, for example, a sun is drawn in the picture, or the persons involved are wiping sweat, wearing a scarf or holding an umbrella and so on.
• While listening to the dialogues of the third part, you can write down the key words, for instance, “米饭”, “买东西”, “电脑” and so on. Then you should associate them with the pictures to choose the right answer.

Fourth section in HSK 1 listening-Listen to the sentences, Choose the right answer to the questions.

During routine reviews, you should try your best to grasp the 150 vocabulary words of HSK-1, memorizing them based on some certain categories. For example, if there are certain options like “商店”, “医院”, “学校”, you may infer that this item could be asking about a place. Therefore when listening to the recordings, you should pay attention to the contents after the words like “去…”, “在…” and etc.

• You should take note of those introductory contents if the item contains options like “爸爸”, “同学”, and “朋友”,..
• You can focus your listening emphasis on “做什么” if the options contain action phrases like “学习”, “工作”, and “坐飞机”.
• Additionally, you should pay attention to the descriptions about “天气” if the options are description words such as “大雨”, “冷”, “热” and etc.
• Meanwhile, you should not only get familiar with those 150 vocabulary words, but also learn simple questions phrases. For instance, “多大了” is asking about age, and the answer usually will be “……岁”. “多少钱” is asking about price, and the answer shall be “……块”. The answer to “怎么去” can be “坐出租车”, “坐飞机”, and etc.
• The last thing to remember is that you should pay attention to the corresponding contacts between different time, persons and events. For example, “昨天上午我去学校的时候，妈妈和爸爸去看电影了”. In this sentence, you should know that, “我” is the subject of “去学校”, while “妈妈和爸爸” are the characters involved in “去看电影”.

For those of us who have yet to travel to China (including myself), this can be an excellent tool in two ways :(1) Practice reading entire texts in characters and testing your comprehension (2) learn more about the culture of China from an insider’s perspective. So later on, you will be better prepared for reading novels and other books in Chinese.

Structure:

Firstly, this book contains an introduction in English, Traditional and Simplified characters explaining how to use this book according to the AP Chinese class curriculum. The book is divided into 8 “Units”:Customs, Daily Life,Economics,Education, Entertainment,Family, Geography and the Mixed Theme. Each chapter contains a test on their subject. This test is divided into reading and listening comprehension, which is to be used along with the free audio downloads that come with the book. The reading comprehension section of the test (shown below) is comprised of a textual passage in both Simplified and Traditional Characters, in which the student must then answer questions about the text read.

However, the listening comprehension part is divided into two parts: (1)“Rejoinders and (2) Listening Selections. During Rejoinders, you will listen to a conversation segment in Chinese and choose one of the four options that best completes and suits the context of the conversation. In Listening Selections, you will hear different forms of communication media, such as advertisements, instructions and notices. You will then have to choose the best option to the question asked about the contents of the recording.

Recommended for:

• Intermediate/Advanced students looking for learning more about Chinese culture using the reading comprehension sections. For instance, those who are interested in gastronomy can try reading the recipe in one of texts and try to make it themselves.
• Students needing listening comprehension practice, who do not have acess to a native Chinese speaker can still take the listening comprehension tests and also practice listening by following along to the recordings with the scripts in Appendix I.
• Students preparing to take the HSK, AP Chinese, SAT Chinese and other Chinese language standardized tests. HINT: don’t write your test directly on the book. Make a photocopy and you will be able to take that test more than once periodically, trying to improve your response time and test score.
• Chinese teachers and students may used any of the units to supplement the curriculum taught in class, by selecting specific chapters in the book. For example, during February, the teacher can use the Customs section as they teach about the Chinese New Year in China
• Those looking for more learning resources. In addition to its free audio downloads, this book contains an appendix listing a myriad of sources for students of all levels, from online dictionaries to the novices, all the way to online news sources for the advanced learners looking . In addition to this appendix, the book also contain a glossary-like “Vocabulary Index”, listing ALL of the characters and terms used in the book.
