Hey everyone! 新春快乐！The Chinese New Year is upon us, bringing in the Year of the Goat and its time to celebrate with other Mandarin learners, including the little ones. Here is an interesting game that children can play to learn more about the Chinese holiday called MagiKid Nian.

Structure and How It Works

In review, instead of focusing on Chinese language and vocabulary, it is directed towards the folklore and customs surrounding the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year. This colorful game has mesmerizing graphics, which show that a lot of effort went into making this game eye catching.

The game follows the story of Nian, a monster that comes out in the darkness of the winter months to wreak havoc and bring bad luck to people. In order to drive away the monster when the New Year comes, you need to scare it away. The only things that Nian is scared of are the color red, loud noises and bright colors. For this reason, fireworks, drums and other items are used to scare off Nian. Your job is to scare off the Nian Monsters with the New Year power ups, without letting them get to you.

Besides the Story mode, there also is the Create mode, where you can record your voice singing a song, or use the game characters as puppets to your very own New Year’s story.

This game has great playability, while being accessible to both children and adults. For the adults who played this game but were unchallenged, I recommend playing the Never ending Mode, which is like the Story mode, except there isn’t a monster quota to defeat, hence “Never ending” mode.

Unfortunately, it does not teach actual vocabulary in Mandarin Chinese, neither characters nor pinyin. However, as stated before, it does explain the customs of the Chinese New Year, in a way that children who are not familiar to the religious and historical background of China, can start being introduced Chinese culture, as they learn the language.

Review

Thumbs Up:

● Colorful and adorable graphics
● Easy to understand and play→ can be played by even the youngest children
● Teaches the folklore behind the Spring Festival Customs
● Free game- no ads/ doesn’t require email
● Works on all iOS devices
● Child lock keeps kids off parent’s area.

Thumbs Down:

● Very few levels to play in Story Mode
● No actual Mandarin vocabulary or pronunciation
● Not available for Android App store
● No interesting for more advanced learners or experienced gamers

Verdict

The bottom line is that Magikid Nian is an excellent game to download for children during the Spring Festival! They will be entertained as they learn, with this beautiful game! Here is a summary of the good and bad about this game. Please take a look and give this game a try so your children learn about Chinese culture.

Discovering Chinese Pro is the first and only Chinese curriculum available online and on an iPad. Each animated lesson includes over 50 interactive practices, stroke order animations, language tools and more. Today, we will review this application for you.

Pros and Cons of Discovering Chinese Pro

Pros

The app covers a lot of content and it covers it well.

There are four volumes comprised of twelve lessons each.

There are many illustrations and animations to keep students with visual and auditory learning styles engaged. The user interface of the Discovering Chinese Pro software is very intuitive and easy to master.

It provides unit assessments for students.

It allows teachers to track homework, practice scores and unit assessments.

Its extensive flexibility allows it to have a high school class or private tutoring curriculum formatted around the use of this series of books.

It works on laptops, iPads, and Android devices.

The collection includes many different materials, including books, worksheets, calligraphy exercise sets, CDS and teacher’s books.

It takes advantage of the “flipped classroom” concept and provides added flexibility for those who prefer to study alone.

Cons

Regarding the prices, the smartest option would be to subscribe to it through the online curriculum in Better Chinese or via the iOS app “Discovering Chinese Pro,” since you can get a much more cost-effective deal out of it.

However, if you are an analog learner who can’t learn from a computer or from an iPad, then you should only buy one semester’s worth of books at a time, and only get the reading books and CDs, which are the most essential materials for your learning. The calligraphy exercises you can do on any piece of paper by repeating the writing of new characters. That way you can learn everything you would learn from the entire collection, but without spending all of that money. But if you can afford the splurge, then get it!

Recommended For:

High school and middle school students with no previous Mandarin learning experience.

Young adults with no previous experience of learning Mandarin.

Prospective college students preparing to take the Chinese SAT and /or AP Chinese Language and Culture tests (use more advanced books in collection, such as 2A and 2B).

“Discovering Chinese Pro” selects its topics similarly to other textbooks but it goes even further with its attention to details and variety of practice opportunities. The most interesting thing about the app is that it is tailored towards an e-classroom style.

While the e-classroom is a great idea in theory, one hopes that principals and school boards will have the courage and confidence to try something new and thereby change the future of Chinese-learning, and even learning in general. For all schools, teachers and students who progressively embrace the flipped classroom model, this application gets a strong recommendation from DigMandarin.

Here is a short interview of Better Chinese

DigMandarin asked several questions which the audiences would be interested in. If you have more questions, please feel free to comment below. We will get the answers for you as soon as possible.

1. Is the Discovering Chinese series available both offline and online?

Yes and no. On the iPad, the content is available offline. Through the Web, the content will not be accessible. Teachers and students can also purchase the companion textbook which is like a traditional printed textbook that can be used when the website it down. It includes the lesson materials, vocabulary and grammar sections.

2. Why did Better Chinese make this kind of online learning system? Are you mainly focusing on the online education? What do you think of it?

We believe that the future of learning will be digital, but in the interim it’s changing the way students are learning.

We focus on learning. We want to provide teachers with the best set of classroom materials and training to help teachers whether they choose to teach via traditional or technology forward methods. That is why Discovering Chinese Pro is not only a digital curriculum, but also has a traditionally printed companion textbook for teachers who prefer to teach in a more traditional manner.

“Teachers want a seamless platform that gives them multiple touch points to connect with students and provide them with the ability to customize the curriculum and differentiated instruction.” This is a James Lin quote. “Discovering Chinese Pro combines a proven Chinese language curriculum with classroom management tools to create a highly effective Chinese language learning environment with high participation rates.”

3. How is the participation system working? How can the teachers and students cooperate learning with each other?

Before technology, to encourage speaking practice, the teacher would ask questions and have the students respond or call on certain students to respond. However, what would happen is that typically the more outgoing or confident students tended to respond more and the students who were more shy or nervous about their pronunciation would tend to participate less.

Through DCP, students are able to practice speaking in smaller groups or individually and receive feedback from the teacher in class or outside of class through our audio and video feedback options. For example, after reviewing a speaking submission, the teacher can record her own voice with the correct pronunciation for the student to hear and practice.

As a result, our teachers have seen participations rates on the speaking front increase dramatically through this program.

4. What distinguishes Better Chinese from other Chinese learning books?

There are many factors that distinguish us from others. These are :

Our expertise in teaching non-heritage learners and our ability to make Chinese approachable for them to learn.

Our training programs combine industry thought leaders with the practical usage of our materials. For example, how do you create a flipped classroom with our materials.

Our technology pedagogy. Given our location in Silicon Valley, we have always found ways to leverage technology in fresh new ways for the Chinese language classroom.

5. What is your future plan about the e-education?

“We are at a very interesting intersection in time where access to technology, understanding about learning, and innovation in technology are converging.

Our plans for the future is to better capture learning styles and learning progress to provide students and instructors more clarity about where they are, to better offer differentiated instructions as well as customized instruction.” James Lin

Here is July’s edition of DigMandarin’s book of the month with the Doring Kinderley’s Chinese English Visual Dictionary:

Thumbs Up:

– Extensive entries on diverse subjects. From mathematical terms all the way to grocery store items.
– Lightweight and compact.
-Well Illustrated and Organized, a common characteristic of Dorling Kindersley.
-Practical and vivid content.

Thumbs Down:

– Due to extensive content and small size font, the characters inside the book are quite small and difficult to read. This also makes memorizing its components a challenge.

Review:

This is probably the learning tool I most recommend to other Mandarin learners, and the one I use most myself. Whether you are travelling in China or simply trying to memorize a vocabulary list for a test, this book has got you covered. Its extensive and well-organized entries combined with its compact and lightweight size permits you to take it anywhere with you.

In fact, one of the sections that most fascinated me was the Home section. It had pages and pages dedicated to words related to household appliances, food, and even culinary verbs (which can be quite an aid when reading a cookbook in Chinese or a restaurant menu).

Although I have never been to China (yet!), this book taught me how to navigate life in China. While it did not contain cultural and historical tips, it taught me the Chinese I might need in daily life. Two examples are the chapters about going to the drugstore and buying groceries. I already look forward to using this book when I finally travel to China.

Indications of Use

Those studying abroad/living in China- take it with you in your purse. It is much more practical and easy to access than a regular dictionary, so you won’t spend much time looking for a word. It can also assist in communicating with other native Mandarin speakers when they don’t understand your pronunciation of a word, by pointing out to them an entry of the book.

For the organized student-Make flashcards for yourself with English and Pinyin on one side and the Chinese on the other. You can even organize the flashcards into categories like the ones in the book (Home, Countries, Plants & Animals. It’s up to you!) For more tips on how to make these flashcards, you can access our article on how to make them here.

For the indenpendent student – try reading each section one by one and notice the similarities between some of the words in the book, since many words in one section belong to the same family and contain a radical character in common.

For those with a visual memory-try drawing over of the illustrations in the book and then shut the book and try to write the Chinese subtitle accompanying the picture and then try to see if you got it correctly. This manner, the meaning of the word will be remembered since the characters will be associated with the memory of the illustrations in the book.”

For those already more confident with their learned vocabulary- You can go to the Chinese charater entry index and try to guess what is the pronunciation and meaning of that character, and then go to its respective page to see if you got it right

Hello Mandarin learners! This month’s Book review shall be on Shao Lan’s much awaited book-Chineasy! This new book continues and expands the content on the famous Facebook page “Chineasy”.

Thumbs Up

Includes Both Traditional and Simplified Characters

Soon available in multiple languages and countries

Excellent tool for creating visual mnemonic devices for novice to intermediate learners

Most recommended for visual learners, children and elder learners as a form of familiarizing with the Chinese characters.

Thumbs Down

Does not teach how to write the characters or their stroke count for consulting the dictionaryMemorizing new characters from the pictures in the book may cause dependency on the illustrations, since the reader may not recognizethe written characters in books and other without the aid of the pictures.

Although it shows examples of sentences with the words learned, it does not teach anything about syntax and grammar, since the great majority of the words are nouns.

Review

This is not the first time DigMandarin.com has mentioned the work of Shao Lan, however it is the first time we actually saw her work concretized in an comprehensive form of all of her images.

Shao Lan first begins explaining the logic behind her work by distinguishing the “building blocks”,” compounds” and “phrases” in her scheme and how do they work together to create meaning. In this organizational method, pictograph-type characters are the foundation for understanding the written Chinese language, the so- called ” building blocks”. Using these basic characters, many more complex and abstract words can be formed, either through : having two simple words joined together to form pictophonetic characters such as 吗 (which uses 口 and 马) , where one word gives meaning and the other gives sound, or by having two pictograph characters joined together to provide a whole new different meaning, such as in 休, which combines 木 and 人, since in ancient times, most people would rest under trees after working in the field all day long. So after this introduction, the book begins teaching all of the 150 basic characters and another 250 characters derived from the original 250.

To let it be clear, Chineasy is not the first pictographic system of teaching Chinese characters. It is quite common to introduce pictographic characters with their representations to novice Western learners in order to familiarize them with reading words in visual characters, instead of in the Western alphabetical form. However, Chineasy goes further and shows how these foundational pictographic characters make up more complex characters, a very important lesson that many Western learners internally learn and comprehend as they transition into more abstract and complex words.

Personally, for me, as a Mandarin student, this book was a helpful tool. Although I am an intermediate- advanced student, I still have learned some new words and characters. However, many of the pictures used to elucidate the characters seemed quite unnecessary such as in the 人 or 火 characters, since they are quite self- evident to most learners by their general shape. In fact, here in Brazil, students remember characters like these , even if in different memorization processes. In other times, this ” word-assembly process” can be quite unnecessary and quite consuming of time The characters that us Westerners need the most help are the one that have similar appearances such as 我，找 and 钱. All three of these words have completely different meanings (I, to look for, money) ,yet at first sight for Westerners, they may look the same, confusing the reader. This event, in which I suffered so much for a long time, is what I call a “pseudo-dyslexia” for Chinese, in where the reader cannot differentiate some characters from others or are switched around in the view of the reader, such as in 找，我,and 钱. So I think that there still should be a bigger focus to help in the interpretation and reading of these tricky words, rather than of the easier words that can be memorized without the help of diagrams, even if the former are more difficult to come up with diagrams for.

Nevertheless, this can be a useful tool to learn more words, or even for simple entertainment, due to the beautiful illustrations and stories in Chinese within the book that use the characters taught in it.

Indications of ways to use

Independent Study- This can be an excellent form for the independent Mandarin learner. If studied and read page by page in a steady daily basis, even an Advanced learner can find themselves learning new characters, either in Simplified or Traditional form.

Tutoring and Teaching Children- One suggestion is to use the chapters of this book in each lesson, focusing on a new character each day. After introducing the new character and showing the words it can form, the child may then be allowed to do a drawing like one of the character illustrations to practice writing the words, after practicing the separate strokes required for the character.

Teaching Adults-This is an excellent introductory for adult novice learners, especially Western readers with no previous language learning experience besides their mother tongue. Using this book will allow adults to come up with their own visual mnemonic devices for reading texts and remembering characters, while learning Chinese culture through the linguistic history behind the characters.

Recommended For

Mandarin learners of all sizes and levels, either as review or as introduction to a new topic

However, it is most successful with children and visual learners

Following up on last’s month article, we continue with this month’s edition of “ DigMandarin’s Book Of The Month”, brought to you by the publisher of “Integrated Chinese”— Cheng &Tsui’s Strive For a 5 AP Chinese.

Thumbs Up:

Excellent Cultural notes

8 practice tests covering each chapter and subject of the book

Texts in both Traditional and Simplified forms

Extensive Vocabulary Index of all the words used in the text passages.

Thumbs Down:

Not so much Chinese grammar, Pronunciation and writing covered

Review:

For those of us who have yet to travel to China (including myself), this can be an excellent tool in two ways :(1) Practice reading entire texts in characters and testing your comprehension (2) learn more about the culture of China from an insider’s perspective. So later on, you will be better prepared for reading novels and other books in Chinese.

Structure:

Firstly, this book contains an introduction in English, Traditional and Simplified characters explaining how to use this book according to the AP Chinese class curriculum. The book is divided into 8 “Units”:Customs, Daily Life,Economics,Education, Entertainment,Family, Geography and the Mixed Theme. Each chapter contains a test on their subject. This test is divided into reading and listening comprehension, which is to be used along with the free audio downloads that come with the book. The reading comprehension section of the test (shown below) is comprised of a textual passage in both Simplified and Traditional Characters, in which the student must then answer questions about the text read.

However, the listening comprehension part is divided into two parts: (1)“Rejoinders and (2) Listening Selections. During Rejoinders, you will listen to a conversation segment in Chinese and choose one of the four options that best completes and suits the context of the conversation. In Listening Selections, you will hear different forms of communication media, such as advertisements, instructions and notices. You will then have to choose the best option to the question asked about the contents of the recording.

Recommended for:

Intermediate/Advanced students looking for learning more about Chinese culture using the reading comprehension sections. For instance, those who are interested in gastronomy can try reading the recipe in one of texts and try to make it themselves.

Students needing listening comprehension practice, who do not have acess to a native Chinese speaker can still take the listening comprehension tests and also practice listening by following along to the recordings with the scripts in Appendix I.

Students preparing to take the HSK, AP Chinese, SAT Chinese and other Chinese language standardized tests. HINT: don’t write your test directly on the book. Make a photocopy and you will be able to take that test more than once periodically, trying to improve your response time and test score.

Chinese teachers and students may used any of the units to supplement the curriculum taught in class, by selecting specific chapters in the book. For example, during February, the teacher can use the Customs section as they teach about the Chinese New Year in China

Those looking for more learning resources. In addition to its free audio downloads, this book contains an appendix listing a myriad of sources for students of all levels, from online dictionaries to the novices, all the way to online news sources for the advanced learners looking . In addition to this appendix, the book also contain a glossary-like “Vocabulary Index”, listing ALL of the characters and terms used in the book.

Make a wish upon a… Horse? Bringing New Year’s Tidings on “Horseback”.

As many of you may know, the Spring Festival began on January 31, marking the beginning of the new Chinese year of the horse also known as Chinese year zodiac. To celebrate this new occasion, the Chinese have come up with a new fashion. Since 2014 is the Year of the Horse, people want their new year’s wishes to be brought by “horse” with a photographic play on words.

The Chinese word for “horseback” is 马上, where 马 (mǎ) means “horse” and 上 (shàng) means “on”. The exact same two characters also mean “soon” or “immediately.” With this humorous play on words, Chinese netizens hope that their new year wishes will come “immediately” in 2014. For example, some people placed a toy gorilla on horseback to wish for a raise in their salary, because the words for gorilla(猩xīng) and salary(薪xīn )have characters with phonetic similar.

But what about the two elephants shown on top of the horse? Another Chinese pun. “A pair of elephants”, in Chinese, is 对象 (duì xiàng), which also means “partner” (boy/girlfriend). The 3 stacked animals actually is someone’s wish to find love in their life.

But what if somebody wants everything for the New Year: love, money, happiness? What do they put?

Easy, just put an eggplant on the back of the horse! The word 一切(yí qiè) means “everything” and “one eggplant” is 一茄（yì qié）.

So, what do you wish to be brought 马上 in 2022? Leave a comment below telling us here at DigMandarin.

As a Mandarin student in Brazil, it is very difficult to find decent apps and books to supplement the content I learn in class. The few supplement materials I find require signing into an account and/or paying. But now I can finally say I found an excellent supplement to my studies. Developed by an indie Brazilian studio,” Mandarin Journey” is a free IOS app that will entertain Mandarin students of all levels. Through an interactive graphic novel format, the player follows Ken, a Chinese American young man who returns to China for the first time since his childhood to visit his great uncle. While there, he travels through the sights of China and discovers more about his great uncle and his cultural heritage.

THUMBS UP:

–	Interactive graphic novel format appealing for all ages
–	No account required
–	Free, without any paid add-ons
–	Smooth gameplay and impressive graphics
–	Stores all vocabulary learned

THUMBS DOWN:

–	First chapters contains vocabulary too basic for more advanced learners
–	Currently, only first chapter available. However, there will be more to come.

REVIEW:

From the first minute of gameplay, the player can see the effort quality of production that was put into this game. The graphics and the playability are very impressive for the standards of educational games, attracting not only young Mandarin players, but also the adult and adolescent audiences. It teaches simplified characters as well as pronunciation. One interesting feature is “Ken’s Notebook” where all the learned vocabulary and phrases are stored so the player can access them whenever they want to review. Furthermore, the story is tailored by the choices made by the player, providing the player a more immersive experience, as they participate through the story.

Unfortunately, for students in the intermediate and advanced levels may find this game too easy in the first chapters, as they cover mostly the exposition of the story and so most of the vocabulary taught will seem ordinary like most Mandarin educational games, yet as the story progresses, more complex words are introduced as Ken goes through China. However, its difficulty progresses quickly.

Although I am an intermediate player who has learned all the basic greetings and words, I still enjoyed playing the game because of its overall quality as well as some of the tidbits of Mandarin and culture I learned through this. Restating, the feature I found most useful was the Chinese dialogues in pinyin, which Ken could not understand what they were saying yet, since it is challenging and engaging for the more advanced Mandarin readers.

RECOMMENDATION:

I recommend this game for students of all Mandarin levels, whether they are just beginning to learn Chinese or advanced students who wish to practice their reading and learn more about Chines culture.

The more advanced learners can practice reading the dialogue in pinyin, since they contain a more complex grammatical structure, more appropriate for the students in higher levels.
