Chinese Characters with the “walk” Radical
辶 is a very common Chinese radical related to “walking” (走 – zǒu). There are more than 380 characters listed under this radical in the Kangxi Dictionary and most of them have some connection to transportation or the action of walking. In this post we’re going to look at some words with the walk radical!
If you follow my series, you will already understand some of the basic characters: 大, 井, 不, 米, 白. Try to bare in mind what you have learned about them and see what happens if the left “walk” radical (辶) is added. In some cases the meaning and/or the pronunciation are somehow related to the initial character:
1. 达
Big 大 (dà) + 辶 = 达 (dá)
This suggest “to go to something big” and therefore means “to reach”
e.g 到达 (dào dá) – arrive, reach
2. 进
A well 井 (jǐng) + 辶 = 进 (jìn)
This suggests “to go into something secluded” and therefore means “to enter”
e.g 请进 (qǐng jìn) – please come in
3. 迷
Rice 米 (mǐ) + 辶 = 迷 (mí)
These have the same sound! 迷 has a variety of meanings including “to bewilder”, “lost” and “confused”
e.g 迷路 (mí lù) – get lost, lose one`s way
However, the link is not always evident:
4. 还 and 迫
Not, 不 (bù) + 辶 = 还, which means “still” or “yet”
While, white,白 (bái) + 辶 = 迫 means “to approach”
Besides these, there are some more words which use the left walk radical:
5. 运 and 送
运 (yùn) – to transport things from one place to another
送 (sòng) – to send
e.g 运送 (yùn sòng)- transport, convey
6. 迎
迎 (yíng) – to meet, to welcome
e.g 迎接 (yíng jiē) – reception, meet ,welcome
This is a collection of some common used characters with the 辶radical in Chinese, I hope you find it much easier to remember now! Do you think I have missed out any important points? Or perhaps you know more about the use of辶 serial characters? Tell us in the comments!
