So I feel like I have hit a wall with my Mandarin. I have been learning for a year or two, semi consistently. One two hour lesson a week for about a year then lived in Taiwan for another. Unfortunately being an English teacher I spoke a lot of English every day but tried to speak as much as I could outside that.
Now back in the UK awaiting the arrival of my baby daughter, things has kind of grinded to a halt. An my level of Mandarin is kind of hovering around the same level. Do you have any suggestions to boost the speed of learning and get back into the flow of things?
Hello , Tomcules I just want to say that if you have a keen to learn a something so how the difficult is work you will definitely do it but if you don’t have a interest and want to do so it was not successful.
Just refuse to think, to have internal dialogue in L1. Have as much internal dialogue, even if it’s awkward, in L2.
For example, when you’re ready to order a coffee, think about what you want in L2: 我要一杯美式咖啡。Not, I want an Americano… force the internal dialogue, then it’ll be internal, natural, instead of forced.
