The verb 是 joins two phrases and expresses a relationship of identity between tow phrases.

 我是学生。 I am a student. （wǒ shì xué shēng ）

 我的老师是中国人。My teacher is Chinese. （wǒ de lǎo shī shì zhōng guó rén ）

In affirmative sentences, when Np2 refers to time , money ,or age, the 是 may be omitted.

今天（是）8月29日。Today is August 29^th. （ jīn tiān （shì ）8 yuè 29 rì ）

这支笔（是）5元钱。This pen is 5 Yuan.  （zhè zhī bǐ （shì ）5 yuán qián ）

是 may never be omitted in negated sentences. The negation of 是 is 不是。

今天不是八月二十九日。

这支笔不是5元钱。
